Homemade machines and devices for the garage. Homemade gadgets for the garage. How to use a garage accessory such as a lift

The word “motorist” today is not just a term denoting the owner of a personal vehicle. Being a motorist is a lifestyle. The modern garage is the stronghold of the home handyman.

Peculiarities

The specificity of arranging a garage space is that the layout, ceiling height, number of floors, garage area, and the number of cars “living” in it are purely individual. There is no recipe for all occasions - everyone decides for themselves what they like.

You just need to take care of:

  • dryness and heating of the room;
  • good ventilation;
  • protection from thieves;
  • arrangement of desktop and storage systems;
  • good lighting.

Depending on the dimensions of the building, the area occupied by equipment, fixtures, and communications should not be more than 20% of the garage area. And the distance from the side rack to the parked car should be no less than the width of its doors.

A garage is a multifunctional space. To properly delimit it, define work zones. This way you can understand whether you have enough space to accommodate everything you need. It is better to sort out the things that have accumulated in it in advance and throw out everything unnecessary.

Naturally, a garage without a workshop area is unthinkable. A workbench placed against the far wall will be useful for repairs and for practicing hobbies. Place tools and finished crafts on the shelf directly above your workspace.

It is convenient to store hardware, dowels and other small items in transparent jars with lids glued to the shelf. Another little trick - a magnetic strip glued to the furniture will help save a lot of space.

Where and how to place the tools?

Order in the workshop is impossible without proper placement of tools.

Place the essentials on a shield or hanging shelves above your workspace so that everything is at hand. It is convenient to store the necessary tools vertically on plywood boards with holes drilled in them. Heavier utensils will sit comfortably on the shelves.

PVC pipe holders are easy to manufacture and convenient.

Homemade rack

Wooden and metal shelving will be the best option for the garage, since plastic ones break quickly and cannot withstand heavy objects.

Racks are:

  • stationary – fixed to the wall for stability;
  • collapsible - if you have not yet decided where it is better to place the rack, it can always be disassembled and mounted in another place;
  • mobile - on wheels so that you can move without unloading;
  • console - for storing long items.

The advantage of wood furniture is its relative ease of manufacture. It can be installed using a standard carpenter's kit, without the help of specialists. A wooden rack can be easily made of any size and shape, and a broken shelf can be easily replaced without dismantling the entire structure. In addition, making a rack from wood is cheaper than from metal.

The disadvantages of a wooden product include its fire hazard and stationary nature.

It is better to immediately install a wooden rack “completely”, since it will become loose when moved.

The most inexpensive and easiest wood to process is pine. It does not rot or crack when dry. But pine also quickly deteriorates. If you don't want to replace your furniture every five years, choose harder wood. Oak and larch are harder and also do not rot.

For maximum functionality, the rack should be installed along the entire length and height of the wall. Just be sure to leave a gap of 5–10 cm between the wall and the rack to make it convenient to install.

We make the width of the shelves such that it is safe to walk past the rack with the car parked in the garage. You should not make the shelves too deep, as they will be inconvenient to use. The optimal size is 50-60 cm.

We cut out the supports from timber with a cross-section of 10 by 10 cm, and the crossbars from thinner timber - 5 by 5 cm in cross-section. The distance between the racks is about a meter and no more, so that the shelves do not bend or break under the weight of the equipment. We make the shelves from timber or a thick plywood sheet. Markings for attaching the crossbars are applied to the wall according to the height of the future shelves. Be sure to measure the evenness of the marked level and tape measure.

Securely screw the boards with self-tapping screws to the wall every 40-50 cm. Attach boards of opposite crossbars to the fixed crossbars. Attach the vertical boards to the horizontal ones, being careful not to screw them to those nailed to the wall. We put the workpiece aside and cut the crossbars for the shelves. We hang them on the frame every meter. We secure the assembled workpiece and measure the final size of the shelves, cut it out and secure it with self-tapping screws.

Anyone who does carpentry will need a mobile rack for storing lumber.

To assemble it you will need:

  • square;
  • screwdriver;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • clamp;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • 4 furniture casters;
  • 4 boards 2.5 meters long.

Decide on the parameters of the rack and draw up a working drawing. Measure and cut the pieces to the required size. Make two identical side parts, like a stepladder. The distance between the crossbars is equal to the height of the shelves.

Assemble the base frame. It must be strictly rectangular. To align, secure the pieces to the table at a 90-degree angle using a clamp and square. Attach the wheels to the base. Secure the side elements at a slight angle, like a stepladder.

A simple rack made of two boards will do a great job of storing long garden tools.

You only need:

  • mark the hole of the holders according to the given dimensions;
  • drill through holes on a carpentry machine;
  • carefully cut out the inclined part;
  • paint or varnish the finished holders and hang them in the place planned for the shelf.

Metal furniture can withstand heavy loads and last longer than wood. To save time and effort, you can order ready-made racks, but it’s cheaper to make them yourself. You don't have to buy new metal, just use what you already have. For example, water pipes that you got by chance, but were not useful on the farm.

Most often, the frame is welded from profile pipes and angles.

This is done like this:

  • We mark the position of future shelves on the vertical posts. Make sure they are equal to each other. The distance between the lower shelves is greater than between the upper ones. At the top it’s time to reserve a place for a high shelf for storing light oversized items.
  • For the base slats, take a corner 5 by 5 or 5 by 7 cm; it will protect things from accidental falling or sliding. The span between the vertical posts is no more than a meter.
  • We weld the corners, control the level of all corners - they must be straight.
  • We check the diagonals of the welded frame, and install crosshairs from reinforcement at the back for additional structural rigidity.
  • Coat the welded joints with an anti-corrosion agent, prime and paint the furniture with wear-resistant paint.

The upper shelves are used for lighter items and are covered with plywood; it is advisable to cover the lower ones with a steel sheet. It is better to reinforce shelves for storing particularly massive objects with several stiffening ribs.

It is also possible to store various small and not very heavy things in a plastic rack. It is easy to assemble from empty canisters.

This option will be useful to anyone who does not have enough space in the garage or the finances to install a rack. And small things will stop scattering around the room in disarray.

To do this, you need to take the canisters and wash them well so that no traces of their contents remain. The same canisters can be used as dividers or pull-out shelves on a finished rack, but then you need to cut off the side so that the handles remain.

A rack made of PVC pipes is also suitable for storing lightweight items.

Making hanging shelves

For the home craftsman, a garage shelf can be more than just a storage area for tools, but also a place to display finished work.

You can assemble the hanging shelf yourself using the same scheme as the rack. It is even easier to install a shelf from corners - metal or wood.

Baskets hung on the wall can also serve as hanging shelves.

It is worth plastering the walls in advance before installing the shelf. This will prevent condensation from appearing on the walls after installing the shelves.

You can attach the shelves in any place where no one will cling or hit them:

  • above the windows, if any;
  • above the workplace;
  • under the ceiling.

Today the market offers various new products such as shelves with a lifting mechanism that can be hung near the ceiling and lowered down when needed.

It’s easy to make a suspended ceiling structure yourself by assembling shelves from thick sheets of plywood or fiberboard on studs.

For this you will need:

  • large anchors (4 pcs.);
  • hex nuts-couplings for the coupler (4 pcs.);
  • simple nuts (12 pcs.);
  • hairpins (4 pcs.);
  • large diameter flat washers (8 pcs.);
  • Grover washers (4 pcs.;
  • drill;
  • perforator;
  • spanners;
  • screwdriver;
  • level;
  • electric jigsaw.

First, we cut out shelves of the required size from a plywood sheet. They can be reinforced at the edges with a metal profile.

We retreat 5-7 cm from the edge of the tile and make holes into which we will thread the pins. This indentation is needed to prevent the edges of the shelves from crumbling during use. To prevent the shelf from bending from long-term use, it is better to install supporting studs every 60-70 cm.

Through the drilled holes we make markings on the ceiling in the place where we will hang the shelf. According to the markings, we drill holes for the anchors, remove dust from them, drive the anchors to the end and tighten the nuts.

Now we connect the studs to the anchors using coupling nuts. We strengthen the connection with ordinary nuts.

  • Screw a nut onto the stud fixed to the ceiling, followed by a washer;
  • string the shelf onto the ends of the pins;
  • We fix it with a Grover washer and a control nut, or better yet, two lock nuts.

The ceiling shelf will make it easier to use the garage. It has only one drawback - a movable design. It is better to fix the shelf with an iron corner. We attach one edge to the wall, the second to the base of the shelf. Now it will not become loose and will last longer.

DIY tool storage shelf

A shield shelf is a more compact alternative to a regular wall shelf and will help you organize your tools inside your garage so that they are all visible.

It’s quite easy to put together a panel shelf from plywood and wooden blocks.

Process description:

  • cut out a board of the required size from plywood and mark the position of the shelves;
  • put together shelves with side walls along the length of the shield;
  • secure the shelves to the panel with self-tapping screws;
  • Then there are two options: we install the bracket on the back wall and hang it on hooks built into the wall or fix it on the support posts of the desktop.

A mechanic's workbench is no longer suitable wooden shelf, and a metal shield with holes, on which it is convenient to hang both shelves and tools on hooks.

How to make a workbench yourself?

A workbench is a must-have item for a garage workshop. It can be used to sort out machine parts, solder radio equipment, and cut out with a jigsaw.

The manufacture of a workbench usually begins with a detailed design drawing.

Measure the area of your workspace and the height of your workbench.

The optimal height of a workbench is usually 90 cm, but this is not an absolute value and depends on the height of the master and whether he prefers to work standing or sitting.

To make your own workbench, you will need:

  • jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • drill and set of drills for wood and metal;
  • screwdriver;
  • carpenter's square;
  • roulette;
  • level;
  • spanners.

When choosing wood, check that it is free of cracks and knots.

Before getting started, prepare:

  • bars 10 by 10 cm for legs;
  • two thick plywood sheets;
  • boards with a section of 5 by 15 cm;
  • bolts (take furniture bolts with a square head so that they do not turn);
  • nuts and washers;
  • self-tapping screws

Draw a drawing based on your measurements, indicate the exact dimensions of the parts so as not to make a mistake.

First, we make the top frame with a spacer in the center. We strengthen 6 supports on the frame. Place the leg in the corner of the frame and drill two through holes through the leg and the side board. Then secure with long bolts. Measure thirty centimeters from the bottom edge of each leg and secure horizontal boards at this height for greater stability of the structure. They will also become the base of the lower shelf or drawers.

Screw the tabletop flush with self-tapping screws. Cover the finished tabletop with a layer of hardboard. For greater wear resistance, you can replace hardboard with a steel sheet.

We measure the gap from the central to the end supports, and according to the measurements we install the shelf. We cut out the grooves for the support legs with a jigsaw or hacksaw. Instead of the bottom panel, you can install drawers. To do this, you will have to buy additional guides, handles and more plywood sheets. Screw the guides with self-tapping screws to the supports and install the knocked-down drawers on them. Make sure the sizes match.

Instead of a shelf, you can install drawers. Above the workbench, install a shield or hanging shelves with a reserve for new tools that will appear in the future.

If metalwork work is involved, only a metal workbench is suitable.

To assemble it you will need:

  • “grinder” with cutting and grinding discs;
  • level;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • measuring instruments;
  • small rack beams made of profiled pipes - for the frame part;
  • steel strips - for welded spacers in the corner area;
  • profile pipes with a wall thickness of 3-4 mm;
  • corner;
  • one and a half centimeter thick plywood and drawer guides;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver

We weld the frame first. To prevent the frame from moving, the beams should be spot welded, laid out on a flat surface. Welding seams are made in turn on one side and the other at the joining points.

We mount racks and a horizontal beam on the back side to the base. Check that all corners are even. If the corners are not straight, they can be corrected with a hammer.

A tabletop is assembled from boards and impregnated with a fire-resistant compound. We tighten the bars with screws and glue them. A steel sheet is placed on top.

The shield for placing tools is mounted on vertical rack parts; the cabinets are equipped with wooden boxes. Treat wooden elements with a fire-resistant compound.

If your garage space is very small, build a folding workbench. You will need a tabletop, a board along its length, screws, dowels, a drill, a screwdriver, legs and door hinges.

First, secure the board to the wall at the level of the future table top. Screw the door hinges to the board with self-tapping screws. Secure the tabletop to door hinges so that it goes down. When raised, it will be held by the legs.

It would be ideal to carve grooves for the legs in the tabletop using a chisel so that they do not slip off.

For car owners, property on wheels is a matter of great concern. Today, a lock is no longer the most reliable protection against car theft.

If you have an old push-button telephone still working. Make a simple electronic alarm out of it. When intruders break into the garage, the smart GSM alarm system will call you or send you a pre-dialed SMS.

The alarm is soldered from:

  • wires;
  • push-button mobile phone with a quick call function;
  • magnet;
  • closed sealed contact;
  • toggle switch or key switch.

The mobile phone should be hidden more reliably. Also take care of timely recharging or power your phone from the network.

We install an alarm system:

  • set up speed dialing to the desired number;
  • remove the front panel to provide access to the keyboard matrix;
  • We solder one wire to the end call button, the second to the shortcut button, then we connect the wires to the reed switch. One wire must be with a switch;
  • discreetly install a magnet and a reed switch on the gate leaves, so that the contacts close when opening;
  • hide the phone and wires so that intruders do not notice them.

How to properly store tires?

A seasonal set of tires is not only a voluminous and bulky item, but also requires special storage conditions. Tire sets with and without rims are stored differently. It is better to hang tires on rims. In this case, it is not necessary to buy special hooks for tires. You can assemble pendants from scrap materials.

Prefabricated wheels can also be stored lying down, but tires without rims are stored only “standing up”, and, moreover, they are turned once a month.

A place for storing “lying” or “standing” tires can be equipped under the ceiling or on one of the shelves of the rack or under its bottom shelf. A ceiling rack for tires can be assembled from profiles and corners - you only need a drill and a grinder, and if you have a welding machine, it can be welded.

Ideas for useful gadgets

Garage workers come up with many interesting inventions to make their work easier.

For example, a cyclone vacuum cleaner. We take a thick plastic or metal container (or a 5 liter bottle) and make two holes in its upper part - one at the edge and the other in the center. The diameters of the holes must match the cross-section of the hoses that will be connected to the device.

The inlet pipe is on the edge. We will install a plastic elbow into it, which will provide cyclonic air movement. We insert the hose from a conventional vacuum cleaner into the central upper hole.

Such a vacuum cleaner will easily suck up small stones, sawdust, dried dirt, and all solid dirt will remain in the tank.

Another useful “homemade product” - a “bottle cutter”, can be made using a drill from scrap materials. All you need is a piece of board or plywood, a utility knife blade and a couple of bolts and nuts.

Mark the centers of the washers by placing them in the middle of the board. Drill the holes, and be sure to drill them from the back side so that the “bottle cutter” does not turn during use. Screw in the bolts.

The life hack should be used like this:

  • We put several washers on the protruding ends of the bolts. The more there are, the thicker the rope becomes;
  • on top of the washers we place a utility knife or at least a piece of it, and for reliability we secure it on top with nuts;
  • let's take plastic bottle, cut off the bottom and make a cut so that you can pull the resulting “tail”;
  • We place the workpiece under the knife and pull the “tail” into a full-fledged rope.

From one two-liter bottle you will get about 25 meters of durable, very useful rope. A strong rope from a bottle will come in handy for tightening reinforcement for pouring concrete, for wrapping sliding tool handles, and even for weaving baskets. To avoid cutting yourself, it is better to work with gloves.

A garage winch is a simple mechanism that will help you drag large and massive loads. The oldest and simplest winch is manual. The cable is wound around it using a long lever. It is relatively compact, does not depend on electricity, is inexpensive, and by increasing the lever, you can increase its draft force.

Disadvantages include the need for significant physical effort and some inconvenience when working in cold weather, in mud or in cramped conditions.

To assemble, purchase:

  • short pipe;
  • axis of rotation;
  • lever arm;
  • cable;
  • carabiner hook

Assemble a winch from the prepared elements:

  • drive the axle securely into the ground;
  • weld a pipe to it;
  • On one side, use a loop to fix the cable on the axle so that it wraps around it when turning, and on the other, hang the hook.

Constructing a cellar as a viewing hole: pros and cons

Any motorist who knows how to independently maintain his car and wants to reduce production costs for its repair needs an inspection pit.

Despite the additional costs of arranging the pit, experienced drivers will benefit, as they will be able to:

  • independently inspect the steering, chassis and brake parts and identify possible faults in a timely manner;
  • change oil;
  • save on minor repairs that you can do yourself;
  • protect yourself from unnecessary costs associated with the dishonesty of car service mechanics;
  • the presence of an inspection hole increases the cost of the motorhome if it is sold;
  • For many car owners, self-inspection of the car and its repair is an exciting hobby.

The following can interfere with the organization of an inspection pit in the garage:

  • groundwater level: if it is higher than 2 meters, water will flood the hole;
  • soil instability;
  • the complexity of organizing a drainage system in a finished garage.

It is ideal to plan the inspection pit at the garage design stage, for example, country house. But often the need for it arises when a garage has already been purchased and it either has no cellar at all or has a so-called “vegetable pit”.

In the first case, you will have to carry out a thorough study of the soil type, establish the level of groundwater and check the presence of underground communications in the location intended for the pit.

It is better to entrust all research to professionals. This will allow you to quickly assess the situation, saving energy and time.

Work can begin if the technical plan of the area allows digging 3 m or more deep - then the deep foundation will be protected from erosion. Otherwise, the foundation will be flooded.

If the garage already has a vegetable pit, part of it can be converted into an inspection room; this will even be somewhat easier than digging a pit from scratch.

First you need to move the entrance to the cellar to a convenient place and build on the missing walls with bricks.

The dimensions of the inspection hole are calculated:

  • length – machine length plus 1 m;
  • width – the width between the wheels is minus 20 cm, so that the car does not fall through when driving into a pit;
  • depth – driver’s height plus twenty centimeters.

If the depth of the vegetable pit is greater or less than this value, it is better to build or deepen the bottom. All elements of the pit and cellar from the outside must be insulated with polystyrene foam and a drainage system must be installed if it has not been previously equipped.

It is better to take care of the wiring for future lighting right away. Also, do not forget to equip a niche in the wall for tools.

Once the work is completed, the garage floor will have to be redone. The problem will be solved by pouring concrete, which you can do yourself if you first install reinforcement or guides.

This way we get a separate entrance to the cellar, where you can store private household products, and a separate inspection hole, covered with boardwalk or a sectional door.

If it is impossible to equip an inspection hole, if the garage ceiling is of sufficient height, a homemade overpass can be an alternative to the inspection hole.

They are:

  • full-size (designed for the entire length of the car);
  • mini-overpasses (allow you to raise the front or rear axle of the car).

The simplest mini-overpass is welded from profiles and reinforcement.

Lighting

Proper lighting is essential for comfortable work in the garage. The illumination of a garage depends not only on the number and type of lamps used and the power density of the network per 1 m2, but also on its area, height, number and nature of work areas, even on the color of the walls. A room with dark walls needs brighter lighting.

A multi-level lighting system for a garage is considered the most optimal. It involves installing a central lamp in the middle of the room and spotlights in work areas.

Calculation of height for multi-level lighting:

It’s easy to check that the lamps are installed correctly – just look at the car. It should not cast a shadow in any direction.

Power calculation formula ceiling lighting: "P = S x W/N":

P – total required power, W/m2. W – power of one lamp, W. N – number of lamps (luminaires), pcs. S – room area, m2.

For LED and halogen lamps, the optimal indicator is 16-20 W/m2. This value is suitable for rooms with a ceiling height of no more than two and a half meters. For higher ceilings, this figure should be multiplied by 1.5.

Halogen lamps operate similar to incandescent lamps, but produce more light. They also have a longer service life - 4 thousand hours. The bulb of a fluorescent lamp is filled with an inert gas. The inside of the glass is coated with a phosphorescent composition, which glows under the influence of an arc discharge.

Lamps must be in shades. You should also take care of the power surge stabilization system.

The most expensive lighting is LED. But it is 50% more economical than fluorescent lamps, and the service life of LED lamps is 50 thousand working hours. And they do not require lampshades, since LEDs do not contain toxic components and provide light that is closest to natural.

When illuminating an inspection pit, low-power LED or halogen lamps can cause an electric shock due to condensation settling on them. LED lamps are more convenient because halogen lamps get very hot. Make the lamp retractable, and it will not suffer from an accidental fall of a tool into a hole.

Heating devices

Before choosing the device itself, determine whether you will heat the garage around the clock, maintaining a certain temperature, or turn it on only while work is being done.

Good ventilation should be done in advance. When installing any kind of garage heating, this is necessary according to safety regulations and Russian legislation.

An excellent option is to connect the garage to the heating system of the house, but it is only suitable for a personal building on a private plot of land.

The most popular option is compact heaters. Many motorists prefer to buy them, thinking that assembling them themselves will cost more.

In reality, you can assemble a compact heater from quite budget materials. The overwhelming majority of homemade heating units operate efficiently using thermal film. Thermal film is a multi-layer electric heater that can be assembled from laminated plastic or carbon fiber. It heats up quickly with low energy consumption.

To check the functionality of the assembled device, you will need a multimeter. The remaining parts can be purchased at a hardware store or found in your home pantry.

You will need:

  • two-core wire with plug;
  • laminated paper plastic (area of one element 1 m2);
  • epoxy based adhesive;
  • graphite, crushed to powder.

First, prepare the epoxy-graphite mixture. The amount of graphite chips determines how well the device will heat. On average, the temperature reaches 60-65 degrees.

Apply the mixture to the rough side of the plastic sheets using zigzag strokes. We fasten the sheets with epoxy glue with the front sides facing each other. Make a frame along the outline of the sheets to further secure them.

Next, we attach the terminals to the graphite conductors on opposite sides of the heater. If you want to regulate the temperature, you can install a dimmer in the wire. To avoid short circuits, the assembled device is thoroughly dried. Then test the device (a multimeter is useful for this), measure the resistance and power. If it turns out that the homemade heater is safe enough, you can use it.

An electric heater made independently using the type of thermal film can be used in both vertical, horizontal and inclined positions.

The main thing is to follow safety precautions:

  • Do not leave the heater on unattended;
  • Children should not be assigned to look after him;
  • Do not place the device near flammable objects.

If you decide to install stove-type heating in your garage, you must obtain permission from the fire department and the garage association.

However, fire inspectors rarely give permission to use homemade “stoves”, and in case of their unauthorized installation, all responsibility for any damage will fall on its owner.

Examples and options

There are many options for using the free space in the garage.

The most popular of them:

  • Workshop. The garage is an ideal place for activities that have no place at home - noisy metalworking, flammable lamp-working and soldering with the unpleasant smell of burnt rosin will finally find a cozy home.
  • Stock. Every home has a lot of necessary things that you don’t want to keep at home - seasonal sports equipment, children’s sleds, even out-of-season clothes and family photo albums.
  • Garden corner. The garage is often used by amateur gardeners to store bulky and oversized gardening supplies.

For the rational use of space, communications and do-it-yourself garage accessories from scrap materials are used. It is necessary to use walls and an underground level in the process, place machines inside the room, and organize normal lighting.

Homemade gadgets for the garage

For comfortable operation of a room intended for car storage, you should adhere to certain recommendations:

  • the tool must be as accessible as possible;
  • storage spaces equipped with shelves/racks are much more convenient;
  • workbenches, inspection pit, homemade machines and DIY garage accessories expand the capabilities of the car owner;
  • the cellar allows you to save space;
  • The productivity of work and minor repairs depends on the quality of lighting.

Organization of work space inside the garage

Depending on the dimensions of the building, the area occupied by equipment, fixtures, and communications should not be more than 10–20% of the size of the garage floor.

Storage areas, racks, workbenches

In 80% of cases, do-it-yourself garage fixtures are built to store accessories, tools, and vehicle equipment. It should be taken into account that the most bulky parts of the car are sets of winter/summer tires, depending on the season.

Tire storage rules

It is more convenient to store wheels on brackets of the following design:

  • two triangular frames from a corner, connected by jumpers from any rolled metal;
  • the triangles are attached to the wall, the wheels are installed perpendicular to the supporting structure, falling slightly between the jumpers.

Wheel storage brackets

This is the most economical option for storing tires in the off-season. The most popular among car enthusiasts are straight and corner workbenches. The lower space is usually filled with shelves or drawers; sharpening machines and a vice are located on the tabletop.

Homemade garage workbench

An example of organizing a corner workplace

A folding workbench can be very convenient

Wood is a universal material for both workbenches and shelving

It’s easier to build a wooden workbench yourself, but it has a shorter lifespan than its rolled metal counterpart, which needs to be welded. If in load-bearing walls During construction, corners for shelves were not included; it is easier to make racks from rolled metal or lumber.

Homemade garage shelving

Use for glass bottle racks

Built-in wardrobes are very compact

Original hanging shelves are suitable for storing long items

The design and arrangement of shelving inside each garage is too individual to follow general recommendations.

Inspection pit and cellar

A necessary accessory for a DIY garage is an inspection hole. Moreover, the owner does not have to carry out all the repairs himself. Underground communications can be used in the following cases:

  • inspection of the chassis, steering, and brake systems before a long trip;
  • oil change, which allows you to save money and does not take much time;
  • minor repairs that can be carried out by the owner's qualifications.

Inspection hole in the garage

It is more convenient to make the entrance to the cellar from a hole, as this will allow you to concrete several steps instead of using an extension ladder.

Cellar under the garage

The main nuances of these designs are:

  • swelling of clay soils is harmful to underground structures;
  • therefore, all elements of the pit and cellar are insulated from the outside with expanded polystyrene;
  • sand or crushed stone is used in the underlying layer before concreting and backfilling of the pit sinuses;
  • Drains are laid along the perimeter of underground structures at the base level to collect and drain water.

The width of the pit should allow the driver to enter it without lighting.

Lighting and ventilation

In garages, parallel circuits of lighting fixtures are more often used. One lamp allows you to use a specific area, several devices are turned on during a major renovation or a visit to the cellar. Minimum power consumption is ensured LED lamps. Daylighting devices have a great resource.

Cars use toxic, harmful fuels and lubricants, so do-it-yourself garage ventilation devices that allow you to create air exchange are becoming relevant. The influx is organized from below:

  • garage - vents in the masonry, protected by bars;
  • cellar - pipe from the garage or from the street.

Ventilation of the garage and cellar underneath

The hood is mounted under the ceiling of the cellar, the roof of the garage, or has the form of vents in the main walls at the highest points.

Other useful ideas

Useful accessories for the garage with your own hands can be made from used dishes, equipment, and materials left over from construction. For example, by gluing the lids plastic cans horizontally/vertically, the owner receives convenient transparent dishes for equipment or hardware, which is always at hand.

Homemade machines

From power tools you can assemble homemade machines and accessories for the garage:

  • drilling - a drill fixed with clamps in a device that moves with a gear along a rack;

Drilling machine from a drill

  • cutting - an angle grinder clamped in a similar way with equipment for metal or wood;

Angle grinder cutting machine

  • wood lathe - the front headstock is made of a drill, the back headstock is made of a chuck, mounted on a frame made of a square pipe.

Drill lathe

The advantage of the machines is more accurate positioning of the equipment relative to the workpiece. The equipment turns out to be dismountable, the drill and angle grinder can be removed and used for their intended purpose.

Hydropress

The simplest design of a hydraulic press is obtained from a car hydraulic jack. To press out/press in bearings and press/compress parts, you will need to build a frame and a removable movable stop. The frame consists of 4 channels welded to each other. At the top, the structure is reinforced with stiffening ribs (kerchiefs), and at the bottom, transverse corners are added, giving the frame stability.

Do-it-yourself hydraulic press from a jack

The stop is pulled in the normal position to the top crossbar of the frame by powerful springs. A hydraulic jack is installed between them, pressing the stop against the lower crossbar of the frame as necessary. The press force is regulated by a jack, the dimensions of the working area are selected depending on the size of the workpieces.

Interesting DIY projects for the garage

Over time, a finished “motorhome” acquires a large number of tools. Conventional homemade products for the garage bring practical benefits without overpayments. Any machines made by yourself will not be inferior in quality to their factory counterparts. Let's look at some devices.

Knife sharpening device

Thus, the useful device receives a hole for the rod in the bolt. The rod is made by hand from thin wire. The carving is made taking into account the length of the sharpening bars.

The bar clamp can be created from:

  • organic glass;
  • ebonite;
  • saw clamp.

The upper part of the plate acts as a clamp. Surface with two drilled holes applied to the bed. Then a common through hole is made closer to the knife. The thread is cut in the frame.

So, the homemade do-it-yourself device is almost ready. The second hole is made only on the plate away from the knife. Then cut a thread for the bolt (needed for tightening). A simple homemade mechanism for the garage allows you to sharpen knives on the go.

The artificial diamond stone is affordable and very wear-resistant.

Pulley for adjusting the speed and load on the machine motor

  • metal;
  • PCB;
  • plywood (something between wood and metal).

One small and two larger circles are cut out in plywood with a jigsaw. The center of the molds must correspond to the diameter of the shaft. To avoid problems with further manipulations, the circles are glued together or seated on a screw and tightened with a nut.

Details useful device tightened with screws. Then the pulley should be processed with sandpaper or a file, placing the structure on the drill chuck. The finished machine fragment can be additionally polished.

  1. Avoid vibration, make sure that the center of gravity is on the axis of rotation.
  2. You can make a toothed pulley. Small channels are made at the central circle before all stages of assembly.
  3. If necessary, a small pulley is made from a thick piece of plywood (one circle). A groove is made in the mold and the part is placed on a screw. A narrow file is applied to the rotating circle.

Do-it-yourself vacuum molding of sheet plastic

  • top and bottom frames;
  • molding plastic;
  • coupling bolts;
  • perforated MDF;
  • opening for the vacuum chamber;
  • plywood base with a hole in the middle.

A hole is made in a piece of MDF or plywood (50 by 50 cm) for a PVC pipe with a three-inch diameter. A frame of beams (30 by 30 cm) is attached to the resulting base with glue. To achieve tightness, all cavities are sealed with sealant.

The edge of the water pipe is glued to the base with one end, and the other is connected to the vacuum cleaner hose. The entire structure stands on legs.

Certain holes are cut in the upper and lower frames to accommodate the vacuum chamber frame (firmly glued to the base). Along the perimeter of the frame, cavities for fastening elements are made at equal distances.

Types of thermoplastic plastic used:

DIY jigsaw

  1. A steel square with a bolt soldered into it is made with your own hands as a file holder block.
  2. The improved block is soldered to the previous saw holder.
  3. Attention is paid to the desktop. Plywood is chosen as the base. The narrow table area is the same size as a jigsaw.
  4. Furniture legs are mounted in the front plane of the table, and a small wooden stand is fixed to the rear plane of the working area.
  5. To create leverage, use only hard wood.
  6. The lever hole must be created slightly larger than the diameter of the pin (it regulates the spring tension).

The described homemade craft should stand on a “sole” that will not interfere with the work process. If necessary, a corner is cut in the area of the base plate.

Do-it-yourself set of cutters for artistic turning

A semicircular grooved chisel-cutter is used for rough turning. The part is made from strips of tool steel.

A universal cutting device used for finishing parts. The tool is made from standard straight chisels.

Shaped cutters:

    chisel scraper.

a tool based on a straight chisel with one-sided sharpening levels the surface of cylindrical workpieces;

a homemade device helps to fill threads and apply decorative marks to a wooden rod.

Cutting tools for soft wood (aspen, linden) have a smaller sharpening angle compared to the sharpening angle of a device for processing boxwood, oak, and birch.

Homemade extension cord with two sockets

The “branded” extension cord reel is made from two plywood disks that are bolted together. The fragments are separated by a duralumin tube and washers.

On one side of the reel, the bolts are recessed to ensure contact with the handle without injury. On the other side, two holes for sockets are drilled at a certain distance. Socket boxes are attached with screws.

Proper storage and use of the tool

Each pipe is attached to a plywood plate with self-tapping screws through a slot. To prevent the pipe fragment from becoming loose during operation, pieces of glazing beads are glued under the sides of the holder with PVA glue.

When it is necessary to hang the holder on the garage wall, the handle is inserted into the holder tube. The handle post fits tightly into the slot and is fixed. With this additional equipment, the reel is mounted on the ceiling or on the bottom of the shelves.

In order for the extension ram to rotate easily, a small handle is mounted on the edge of the device disk, which consists of tubular sections of various diameters. A larger diameter pipe is placed on a smaller hose and firmly fixed with a flat screw.

DIY crafts for the garage: the best ideas with photos

Useful homemade products for the garage with your own hands

Most often, during the initial arrangement, all the necessary furniture is ordered. But if you rent a room or don’t want to take money out of the family budget for this, then you can easily arrange it on your own, especially if you know how to hold basic tools in your hands. To help yourself and for inspiration, you can use the video from homemade products for the garage with your own hands (YouTube can please you with a variety of ideas), and you can also take into account tips on arrangement, which will be the basis for a successful layout.

If you look at the photo that shows the optimal set of useful furniture elements, you will notice useful nuances for yourself. First, the location of any storage system must be located at a certain distance from the walls. It is believed that there should be at least half a meter between the machine standing indoors and the rack for normal, comfortable work inside. If the shape of your car storage is more like a rectangle rather than a square (this happens quite often), then it is worth moving all the storage for tools and useful things to one area along the far wall opposite the door. This is where you can place not only a table or shelving unit, but even a carpentry or lathe with maximum convenience. It would be worth mentioning that all storage of your tools should be located inside the garage only if it is securely closed or is protected by a tightly closed gate in the country. Otherwise, it is better to place there only the most necessary things, preferably those that are not of particular value to robbers.

If you plan to install windows yourself in a separate room, which is located on the territory of your suburban area, then it’s better to make them the so-called attic type, that is, located in the roof, and choose a place just above such a working area. In summer and spring, this arrangement of windows will help you save on lighting, sunlight will be quite enough for all types of work, besides, you will also be able to ventilate the room, because ventilation cannot always cope properly, especially if you are going to work inside, like in a workshop.

If you have a total shortage of money or out of love for art, you can make an original storage system using old empty cans. Any motorist accumulates quite a lot of them over the course of a year, and if you ask your fellow neighbors, there will be enough for each compartment of such an interesting cabinet. Of course, there is nothing complicated here and to perform such homemade garage DIY video-lessons are not needed at all. You need to take a plastic canister and wash it well so that no traces of its contents remain. Armed with metal scissors, a knife or other tool, we cut off the front cover of the canister, but so that the sides remain and the contents do not fall over the edge. To make the structure more stable, you can fix it on the back wall using self-tapping screws, but we will, of course, drive them not into the wall, but into a wooden strip, which we attach with dowels.

Do-it-yourself garage crafts photo

The same option as shown in the photo can be used in homemade projects for the dacha, where you also often need to set up a workshop, and even less space is allocated for it than is left in the garage. For such a design you will need to build a frame from wooden planks, and make notches along its upper and lower edges where the cells will be inserted. Most likely, the inspiration for this design was the classic hives that are used for breeding bees; the system here is exactly the same. The sheets that are inserted inside have a perforated surface and the presence of these small holes will allow you to screw nails inside, hang hooks to hang tools and useful devices as conveniently as possible so that they do not fly off when pulling out and retracting.

Exactly the same perforation can be included in a furniture set. Having such a complete set of everything necessary for a home craftsman, you can build many useful homemade products for the garage with your own hands, video with whom you are online. In popularity, such resources may soon overtake popular hand-made projects, because men, no less than women, want to make the space around them, their kingdom, beautiful, functional, and comfortable.

Interesting DIY crafts for the garage

We are used to either simply throwing away tires that are completely worn out, or making crafts from tires for the garden with our own hands. Having spent last winter's set on a swan or a flowerpot, this year you can easily allocate it to your loved one by making an entire furniture set. Frankly speaking, you will need not only car tires for this purpose, but also bicycle tires, because their backs can be designed, turning the stool into a chair.

Practice making such furniture and soon you will be able to replace your coffee table with such a table in your living room with your own hands; crafts made from tires not only look beautiful, but can also become part of an original design concept.

A table and chairs are great; there will be somewhere to sit, but with the question of what to cook a delicious kebab on, our next idea will help. The fact is that an ordinary folding barbecue may not maintain the required temperature of the coals for a long time, and if you like to sit near the fire for a long time, you should make something larger. We will slightly modernize crafts made from wheels for the garden and present to your attention a barbecue made on the basis of a wheel rim. In order for the rim to maintain the set temperature well and not allow the coals to cool, it needs to be lined with bricks, but for maximum decorativeness of such a homemade product, it is better to file them a little using a grinder to fold them in a circle. The bottom must be filled with any available material, which does not support combustion, for example, fine crushed stone.

Homemade products for the garage with your own hands drawings

If you plan to spend quite a lot of time in your makeshift workshop, then among those you are interested in DIY DIY for the garage - heating, lighting, ventilation, that is, the arrangement of a fully comfortable stay inside for a long time. Some people prefer to install infrared heaters, but from the point of view of the cost of electricity this will not be a very rational option. A good option might be water heating, but it is best designed in garages that are located next to a residential building.

You can place solid fuel boilers of any design inside any type of garage, even make your own potbelly stove out of metal using welding machine. But do not forget that with this type of heating, the interior decoration must be made of non-combustible materials, and the ventilation must be done efficiently, even at the stage when we are building the roof with our own hands, in order to promptly remove all combustion products from the room.

DIY homemade machines for the garage

If you have a need for some specific work, then you can use special machines, for example, a pipe bending machine, which can be useful not only for motorists, but also for motorcycle owners.

DIY Garage Tools - Turn your camper into a home workshop!

Required tools and materials

Any car enthusiast can make a variety of garage accessories with his own hands, using inexpensive materials and the simplest tools. Such homemade crafts by a home craftsman turn a motorhome into a full-fledged workshop.

Garage workbench – it’s hard to live without it!

If you plan to do independent maintenance of your vehicle in the garage, as well as carry out a variety of repair work and make your own crafts, it will be difficult to do without a workbench. It is usually made of wooden boards, which are mounted on a reliable base (profiled metal pipe or thick wooden beam).

It is also possible to make a desktop from metal blanks. They are easy to cut to the required sizes and assembled into one durable structure using steel corners and hardware (universal screws, screw connections, bolts, etc.) or using a welding machine.

The manufacture of a wooden or metal workbench always begins with drawing up a detailed design drawing. You must correctly assess the workspace of your garage and fit the desktop into it as harmoniously as possible. It is advisable to provide shelves and drawers (pull-out) on the workbench. They will allow you to keep all kinds of tools at hand. It is recommended to install a small vice on the tabletop.

Making a metal workbench

If your garage has shelves or racks (or you want to mount them), experts advise installing a workbench next to them.

Then you will get excellent work area, where you can do any kind of home creativity, producing original and useful homemade products for home.

  1. Assemble a tabletop from boards with geometric parameters suitable for you (for example, 200 by 10 by 5 cm), connecting wooden products together with metal ties and good glue. For a standard workbench suitable for any garage, it is enough to take 20 of these boards.
  2. Make special grooves on the tabletop (on the 5th and 16th boards) for the stops. The parameters of the grooves are 2.5 by 2.5 cm.
  3. After the glue has dried, the tabletop must be planed so that a perfectly flat working surface is obtained.
  4. Use 80 x 10 x 10 cm bars to make legs for the workbench. Grooves should be provided in the front supports. You will insert brackets into them, which you will then connect to the beam (longitudinal).
  5. Assemble the base of the table from two frames made of 10 x 5 cm boards and fix it to the support. The frames are cut into the legs of the workbench by about 2.5 cm, and then they are secured with bolts.
  6. Attach the supporting walls (back and side) to the resulting structure. They can be made from centimeter plywood or chipboard sheets.

Now you need to connect the top frame to the tabletop. This operation can be carried out without problems using bolts. Don't forget to apply drying oil to the made wooden workbench and coat it with varnish. On such a table you will make any crafts with special pleasure!

A shelving unit is a must for the garage!

Over time, any vehicle owner’s motorhome turns into a kind of warehouse where a variety of items and tools are stored. They all need to find a convenient place so that each device is easy to find. A self-made rack allows you to efficiently organize the storage of tools.

You can make such a structure from metal and wood. In the latter case, use solid wood - beech or oak. Shelves and drawers made from them can withstand quite serious loads. According to accepted standards, the rack must maintain a pressure of at least 150–160 kg. At the same time, it is not recommended to load home-made structures with things that generally weigh more than 500 kg.

Wooden shelving

Let's see how you can quickly make a garage shelving unit while spending a minimum of money on purchasing materials. The work flow diagram is as follows:

  1. Take a board 9 cm wide and cut it into pieces of different sizes (18–30 cm). We will use these pieces as supports for the rack.
  2. Make the shelves from a thicker board - 19 cm thick. To do this, you will need to cut it into pieces of the required length.
  3. Mark the board for the base of the structure, indicating on it the locations of the spacers (they are usually spaced 2.5–3 cm from the edge of the base). Now you need to attach (it is advisable to use construction adhesive) the top spacer and nail it to it (with regular nails suitable sizes) the top shelf of the rack. Then repeat these manipulations with other shelves and spacers. Lastly, the lower expansion element is attached.
  4. Turn over the assembled structure, tighten the base of the rack with spacers using screws.

The structure for storing various tools and things is almost ready. You just need to sand the rack and then apply an oil varnish to the wood (it’s better to do two layers), and then attach it with anchor screws homemade design to Wall. The places where the rack is attached to the wall are under the lowest and highest shelves.

Useful technical homemade products for the garage - a press and a cyclone vacuum cleaner

A homemade clamping device, which is sometimes impossible to do without in home-made projects, is very simple to make. You will need:

  • hydraulic jack;
  • metal platform bed;
  • profile pipes with a cross section of 6x6 and 4x4 centimeters (two pieces of each will be required).

The press is done this way:

  1. Attach two vertical guides (4 by 4 cm pipes) to the base of the structure.
  2. Weld between them (at the very top) a piece of pipe 6 by 6 cm.
  3. Install another 6 by 6 cm pipe so that it moves without difficulty along the mounted guides.

Homemade garage press

The use of such a technical homemade product is elementary - you place it on work surface press the products you want to connect, cover them with a thick plywood sheet, lower the jumper pipe with the jack placed on it. You only need to apply pressure to the jack to glue two products or your own crafts together for centuries.

But with the help of the following homemade product - a cyclone vacuum cleaner, you can always restore perfect order in the garage. It is made from thick plastic or (which is better) from a metal container. It must be sealed. The scheme for making a homemade product for effective garbage collection in a motorhome is as follows:

  1. Make two holes in the lid of the container. Place the first one at the edge, the second one in the central part. The diameters of the holes must correspond to the cross-sections of the hoses that you will connect to the device. One hose is connected to the hole from the edge, it is intended for collecting debris, the other is needed to connect a regular vacuum cleaner.
  2. In the inlet pipe of the described homemade product you need to install a plastic elbow. It will ensure the process of swirling (cyclone) air in the tank. Due to this elbow, the effectiveness of such a homemade product increases, which easily and quickly absorbs small stones, lumps of dirt, sawdust and other solid contaminants. All of them will collect in the tank that you connected to the vacuum cleaner.

Device for making strong rope from plastic bottles

When heated, the material from which bottles for mineral water and various drinks are made can shrink. This gives us the opportunity to make excellent rope from such containers. With its help, you can very firmly connect various parts and assemblies in a motorhome and in the household in general.

Rope made from a plastic bottle

To make a device for making homemade cords, you need to stock up on two bolts with washers and nuts, metal washers, a piece of thin board or plywood, a utility blade and an electric drill. We make the device like this:

  1. Place two washers in the middle of the board or plywood and mark their centers.
  2. Drill holes in the marked centers with a drill.
  3. Drill holes on the back side (this is a mandatory procedure to ensure that there are no twists or rotations when using the device).
  4. Screw in the bolts.

The use of this craft is simple. You need to put several washers on the protruding areas of the bolts (their number determines the thickness of the rope being cut). Then you should place a utility knife on top of the washers (you can even use a piece of it) and strengthen the structure by installing several more washers and tightening the nuts until they stop. After this, the homemade device must be secured with clamps on a garage workbench or other work surface.

Next, we take a two-liter plastic bottle, cut out the bottom, cut a strip (very small) of the required length and place our “blank” under the knife. You need to pull the tape with one hand, and hold the container being cut with the other. From one 2 liter bottle you will get about 25 linear meters of excellent rope with high shrink characteristics.

Homemade tools for the garage, ROLLING JACK

Most car owners spend at least two hours every day caring for their car, and even more on weekends. If we talk about something major, for example, engine repair, then we can talk about several days. For this reason, it is extremely important that the garage environment is as comfortable as possible for work.

Setting up a garage is not as easy as it seems, because in addition to spare parts and tools, it usually stores everything that does not fit in the apartment. Moreover, any repair is pollution, which sooner or later turns the garage into a very unattractive place. In short, even during construction, you need to think about how the garage will look in the future, how best to combine a workshop and a miniature warehouse in it.

First you need to decide on the main tasks. First of all, the garage should always be clean, so for finishing you need to use non-staining and easy to clean materials. It is also necessary to draw up in advance a diagram of the location of tools and equipment, that is, determine where the racks, shelves, workbench, etc. will be located.

Stage 1. Interior decoration

In this regard, to finishing materials there are a number of requirements. Materials must be:

  • non-flammable;
  • resistant to mechanical damage;
  • able to withstand exposure to aggressive chemical environments;
  • resistant to stains.

Moreover, they should be easy to clean and not absorb odors. Obviously, not all materials have such qualities. Those that do have them include plaster, lining and ceramic tiles. Each option has its own strengths and weaknesses, let's get acquainted with them.

1. Plaster

An ideal option if you want to hide uneven walls. Plaster will effectively hide all existing defects and improve the interior of the garage.

Note! The plaster must be covered with a layer of facade paint, otherwise the surface will begin to crack and crumble.

2. Lining

Lining is used mainly in the northern regions of the country, since it is very convenient to place thermal insulation material between it and the profiles. In this case, it is better to use a facade profile made of polyvinyl chloride - it is fireproof and waterproof.

The only drawback of the lining is its low strength - after a strong impact, the panels are deformed and need to be replaced.

A more labor-intensive and expensive option. Requires preliminary calculation of the strength of the walls, because the tiles weigh quite a lot.

At the same time, ceramics do not burn, are easy to clean and are highly durable. If the garage will be sold in ten years, then it is better to decorate it with ceramics. Expensive, of course, but for a long time.

Stage 2. Inspection hole

To repair a machine, it is advisable to equip an inspection hole. Even the most minor breakdown becomes a serious test if it is impossible to reach it without an inspection hole. In such cases, you have to go to a service station and pay a considerable amount for repairs.

In a word, the arrangement of the inspection pit will soon pay off. Below is the sequence of actions.

Step 1. First, the dimensions of the future pit are determined and markings are made. In this case, you need to maintain a balance - firstly, the pit should be spacious enough, and secondly, its width should be such that no problems arise when entering the garage.

The required width is 0.7 m; it will allow you to feel comfortable when carrying out repairs and at the same time leave enough space for parking maneuvers.

Note! When marking, you need to leave a margin of approximately 20-25 cm for the wall thickness.

Regarding the depth, it depends on your own height, but again it is better to make it a little deeper than required - it is much easier to equip additional flooring than to redo the floor when deepening it.

Step 2. Once the marking is completed, you can begin excavation work. The most difficult thing is to dig a hole, because you will have to remove more than 9 cubic meters of soil.

Step 3. The floor is leveled and covered with a 25-centimeter “cushion” of crushed stone. It is noted where the niches for the tools will be located.

Step 4. The walls can be poured with concrete or lined with brick. Concrete is more reliable, so it will be considered.

First, the floor is poured; a thickness of 7-8 cm will be quite enough. For reliability, you can pre-lay the reinforcement. Next, a wooden formwork is constructed, which will be gradually filled with mortar in tiers of 40 cm. The upper edge is reinforced with a metal structure, and lamps are installed.

Note! It is advisable to cover the concrete floor with a wooden ladder, because it will be much more pleasant to work on such a surface.

Stage 3. Shelving

For ease of use, each tool should have its own place. Shelves and racks can be purchased ready-made, but they are quite expensive and do not always meet the needs of the car owner. Therefore, it is better to make the rack yourself. It seems difficult, but only at first.

Step 1. First, the dimensions are marked. Most “store” racks are equipped with shelves 1 m wide. This is not enough for spare parts, so the width needs to be made larger.

You also need to leave a gap of at least 20 cm from the floor so that there are no difficulties with cleaning the floor. It is advisable to perforate all shelves - this will give two advantages at once:

Step 2. To make a rack, use a metal frame from a profiled pipe or a 30x30 corner. The parts are welded or bolted together, then the shelves are cut out. Usually they take boards for this, but the best option there will be moisture-resistant plywood - it costs more, but it will last a long time.

Stage 4. Shelves

Like shelving, it is better to make shelves yourself.

Step 1. First, the number of shelves, their sizes and installation locations are determined.

Step 2. In accordance with the calculations, everything necessary is prepared:

Step 3. Using the mounting level, the mounting locations are determined. Next, holes are made and dowels are driven into them.

Note! For secure fastening, it is advisable to use dowels with hooks.

Step 4. With a certain step (in accordance with the holes made earlier), hangers with eyes are fixed on the shelf. They can be nailed with regular nails. The assembled shelves are hung on dowels.

It is worth remembering that hanging shelves should not be too long, otherwise they will break under the weight.

Stage 5. Garage workbench

The most convenient workbench for a garage would be one that combines shelving and a work surface. This way, the tools will always be at hand, which will significantly reduce the time spent searching for one or another of them.

To make a workbench, a metal frame is assembled, on which a wooden tabletop with shelves is installed. The tabletop is covered with sheet steel so as not to damage the structure during operation.

The workbench must be equipped with several sockets for electrical tools, and also a fluorescent lamp must be installed, equipped with iron brackets for this.

Stage 6. Garage cellar

Often garages are equipped with cellars in which preservation is stored. This point, as well as the inspection hole, needs to be thought out in advance.

Step 1. First the old one is deleted flooring, after which all the pieces are removed and the garage is cleared for digging a pit.

Step 2. Next, excavation work is carried out. In this case, special attention should be paid to the type of soil, because if the soil is sandy, then careless digging may cause the walls of the room to collapse. That is why it is advisable to use a variety of supports made of wood and metal.

If the soil is clayey, then there is nothing to fear, because it can withstand any load.

Step 3. The bottom is filled with crushed stone and carefully compacted. Next, the reinforcement is installed and the floor is filled with concrete.

Step 4. The walls are built from bricks.

Step 5. The cellar is covered with a reinforced concrete slab, after which waterproofing is laid - bitumen or roofing felt. For insulation, you can use any thermal insulation material.

Note! A cellar can be equipped even if the groundwater level is quite high. To do this, a metal tank is welded throughout the pit. When the water level rises, the tank will rise, and in the summer it will simply lie at the bottom.

Step 6. All that remains is to take care of the ventilation of the cellar. To do this, steel pipes (2 pieces) are installed above the ground level, preferably on opposite walls of the structure. The supply pipe is located below, and the exhaust pipe, accordingly, is located under the ceiling. Both pipes must be the same diameter.

A few words about ventilation in the garage

Such ventilation may seem unnecessary, but without it a lot of dust will accumulate in the garage, which will negatively affect not only the body, but also the internal parts of the car. Yes, and exhaust gases are harmful to the body.

The simplest and most affordable option is natural ventilation. Two openings are equipped for it (the same as for the cellar). For maximum efficiency, the inlet and outlet pipes must be installed diagonally, opposite each other.

A garage press is assembled from scrap materials. No complex parts are needed; it is made practically from scrap metal scraps. We will need:

  • Two sections of channel, 80 cm long each, with shelf dimensions of 50x30 cm.
  • Piece profile pipe diameter 40 or 60 mm, length 2.5 meters.
  • Iron plate 8 mm thick, dimensions 250x250 cm.
  • Two corners, one of which is 300 mm long, with a cross-section of 50x50 mm, the second is 250 mm long, with a cross-section of 25x25 mm.
  • The hydraulic jack is the main mechanism of the press.
  • Two springs and bolts of different diameters for fastening. They are selected locally.

The base on which the press is located can be any plane, as long as it is strong and solid. Usually the press is installed on a workbench.

Homemade press on a workbench

First we make the side racks on which the entire mechanism rests. To do this, we take two sections of channel. From the bottom, for emphasis on each, corners are attached with the letter T. You can immediately make fastening points in them for subsequent installation on the base by drilling holes in four places on each edge. Then, using the same principle, a corner is attached to the upper part of the channel, and the pressing part of the press - a metal plate - is attached to it.

Now on the bottom of the support channels you need to make fastenings for the springs that return the press mechanism back. To do this, two holes are drilled and a bolt is screwed in from the inside. Then, using the same principle, the two upper fasteners are prepared on the underside of the pressure sheet.

Now all that remains is to make a stand for the improvised press. To do this, two profile pipes are cut, the length of which is slightly longer than the side supports from the channel. Connect them in such a way that they tightly grip the vertical posts of the press, but do not clamp them. A jack is installed under them, and holes are drilled in place for its fastening.

The homemade press is ready. For smooth movement, the side channel is lubricated with grease or oil. When the need arises to use it, the mechanism is installed on prepared mounts and the frame is tightened with bolts.

It’s easy to build an alarm system in the garage with your own hands; you don’t need any fancy “devices” for this. All that is needed is an old push-button telephone, a sealed contact, a spring switch, or better yet, a breaker and wires.

Do-it-yourself telephone alarm for the garage

The alarm is assembled as follows:

  1. On your phone, you need to set up a one-click call and enter your number.
  2. Then carefully disassemble it to connect the alarm wires.
  3. If the “hang up” and “call” functions on the device are controlled by one key, then the first wire is soldered to it, and the second to the speed dial digit.
  4. If these functions operate separately, then the third wire from the alarm breaker goes to the key.
  5. If the button is used with two contacts, then they are soldered onto the call and dial function button.

Assembling a homemade garage alarm from a telephone

When making such homemade products, keep in mind that the breaker button will play a major role. It must be installed on the edge of the garage door between its opening and closing parts. At the same time, it should be positioned so that rain and snow do not fall on it. And the phone needs to be hidden in an inaccessible place, for example, in the far corner of the rack you built. To do this, you need to solder long wires to the contacts in advance. When closing the garage, the breaker button is pressed by the garage door leaf, and at this time the alarm is in standby mode. When the gate is broken into or opened, the contact opens and the circuit signal is sent to the telephone, which will dial the entered number.

Remember that DIY projects like garage alarms require a certain amount of secrecy. You don’t need to tell everyone what a craftsman you are.

It is simply impossible without such structures as racks with shelves. You can put all the little things, spare parts, tools on them and attach a homemade press in disassembled form. To ensure that such homemade products fit into the garage space, first determine the location for their installation. They are usually constructed on one side of a wall or at the end of a room. The width must be calculated so that there is free access to the car and the open doors do not touch the pillars.

To install shelving you will need:

  • block with a cross section of 50x50 mm,
  • sheets of chipboard or OSB for the construction of shelves,
  • iron corners and nails.

The base of the rack must be strong, because the considerable weight of the laid out tools presses on the shelves. Carry out all the calculations in advance and only then start working.

The basis of a homemade tool rack

The block is attached to the ceiling first. To do this, you will need self-tapping screws with plastic plugs. Using a hammer drill, holes are drilled along a pre-marked line in increments of 20–30 cm. Plugs are installed in them and the block is attached to them with self-tapping screws. Then the plumb line determines the installation location of the lower bar. Both the top and bottom bars should be on the same horizontal line to keep the shelving level and strong.

Now you need to install the vertical posts. For better stability of a rack with shelves, they need to be fastened every 40–50 cm. They are fixed with nails, which are driven in using the “oblique hammering” method or using iron corners. We measure the distance from the top bar to the bottom and according to the size we prepare the vertical elements of the shelving frame.

Now you need to install horizontal jumpers to support the shelves, but first you need to mark the places for their attachment. For this you will need a tape measure. From the floor, mark the distance to install the first row of shelves on the rack on each vertically installed block. Then measure the distance between each stand. We cut the bars to these sizes. Now they need to be secured. We insert one between the posts and secure it with screws from the end, two on each side. This way we install all the frame elements. Then, from the installed bars, the second row of shelves on the rack is marked with a tape measure. They are installed in the same way.

Installation of frame elements of a homemade rack

Before installation, it would be better to calculate in advance the number of shelves on the racks and assemble the frame according to the drawn-up drawing or diagram.

Having assembled the outer frame, all that remains is to secure the bars to the wall to install the shelves. A line is marked on the wall, at the level of each row of cross beams on the frame. Then the horizontal position is checked with a building level and the timber is attached along the entire length of the structure according to the markings.

All that remains is to make the shelves for the rack and install them. We measure the distance from the wall to the edge of the frame and from one vertical post to another. According to the obtained dimensions, we cut the chipboard sheet, install it in place and, for reliability, fix it on top with self-tapping screws. We do all the shelves in the same way.

Shelves usually don’t have doors; you can hang a dark fabric curtain along the entire length. That's all, the place to store the necessary things is ready. All that remains is to model a homemade workbench and it will be completed in the garage.

It is impossible to make homemade items in the garage without having a workbench at your disposal. First, its support is assembled from corners or a profile pipe. It is better to connect these parts by welding. But if this is not possible, then bolted fastening is allowed. But for this you will have to additionally mark the joints and drill holes. The convenient height of the finished workbench is 90 cm from the floor. This will make it more convenient to carry out work at the workbench. But for some it is better to repair while sitting, in which case the height of the workbench will be different. The dimensions and dimensions for each garage are different. And it’s better to decide on them before assembly.

Having assembled the base, we move on to making the tabletop for the workbench. Recommended thickness is 7–7.5 cm. Can be made from a single sheet of multilayer plywood 100 mm thick. If this is not possible, we will do it differently. Let's glue together a table top from several sheets of regular plywood. The standard thickness is 1 cm and in this case 7 pieces will be enough. Having decided in advance on the size of the workbench (its upper part, where the table top will be attached), we saw off the plywood along it. You can use PVA glue for connection, but Moment or BF is better. It must be applied to each sheet separately and after waiting for 3-5 minutes, connect all the sheets.

Making a workbench top from plywood

After this, the glued sheets must be laid on a flat place and pressed down on top with a heavy load; everything should remain in this state for 24 hours. In order not to cut each sheet of plywood to size, you can first glue them together, and then cut out the table top for the workbench from the prepared material.

Now you need to cut off an iron sheet for the top covering of the working surface of the workbench, on which all work will be carried out (metal 4–6 mm thick is required). For accuracy, it is better to place it on plywood and trace the outline with an awl or nail. Then cut the sheet with a jigsaw equipped with a metal file. The tabletop must be secured with bolts, having previously drilled holes in it and on the workbench. After assembling the workbench, you can make small shelves and cabinets with doors in its lower part. Any plywood or pieces of chipboard left over after making the racks will be suitable for this.

A variety of homemade products make the life and work process of a car enthusiast much easier. There is no need to look in the corners to see where everything is, all the details are in their place. A simple-to-assemble alarm system will reliably protect the garage from burglary or car theft.
